Has Hollywood Ruined Doom?
It’s not very often that I find myself actually excited over an upcoming moving. In fact, the only thing I’ve wanted to see in the last year has been Serenity. (Yes, I’m a huge ass Browncoat. Deal with it, monkeys.) The only exception to this has been the talk of the movie adaptation of Doom. I knew the very moment I first started playing Doom 3 that this was simply the perfect setting for a great sci-fi flick.
So clearly, I was very excited when I was flipping through the channels the other day and I happened to catch the last few minutes of the show Coming Attractions, a show on the E! network that shows movie trailers. Just as the channel took focus, the host began reading off the description and release date for the film. I seriously went nuts. I knew it was coming, but when you first hear that it’s coming soon, it’s a totally different story. The problem was I missed the trailer!
The second that clip ended, I threw open my laptop and began a voracious search. Well, “search” isn’t exactly the word I’d use here since I already knew where I needed to look: Apple’s Movie Trailers. There is was, the official trailer for Doom. I don’t think it was possible to have clicked on a link any harder. As the trailer loaded, my feet began to twitch, my grin became huge I was clearly about to enjoy myself.
That is, until the first few seconds of the movie where they discuss “the last 10% of the human genome has been mapped” and now “all hell is breaking loose”. From the way it sounds to me, it’s just another shitty clone of Resident Evil. That isn’t to say I wasn’t flat out impressed with how closely the footage from the movie matches up with that of the game. No, they got high marks in that department. However, if this pans out to be something other then hell spawn, I’ll be one pissed off viewer. No normal zombies, no mutated virus, nothing. Hell, I don’t even want to see the stupid Soul Cube (I’ll deal with it, but I always thought it was sorta lame).
If nothing else, I do hope they worked in the the cherub. God dude, that thing freaked me out every time. That crying it does when it’s nearby just sent chills down my spine.
Anyhow, no doubt I will be seeing this when it comes out. Even if they do screw it up (as I expect), the potential here is high and if it pans out well, I wouldn’t want to miss the chance to see it on the big screen.
