Today’s Firefox Extension
Lets face facts here; when it comes to spelling, I rank somewhere between a domesticated spider monkey and a third grader. Since I can also be somewhat categorized as a mild perfectionist, this tends to make most forms of online communication far more difficult a task than necessary. I’m always moving between Google and Microsoft Word to make sure the words I’m writing sync up with the words everyone else already knows. Needless to say, I was a very happy camper when I discovered today’s Firefox extension about a month or so ago.
Allow me to introduce you to SpellBound. This extension creates a context menu option to check the spelling of the content in any text box you find online. Powered by a Mozilla Dictionary in a localization of your choice, this extension picks up on an amazing number of errors.
There do seem to be a few issues, however. For example, I’m currently running 1.5b2 and when I correct a word in the spell check window, it looses it’s scroll bars. This forces me to expand the window to accommodate the size of the data being checked. Another annoyance issue I’ve run into is whenever I add a new word to my dictionary, the underlines indicating an unrecognized word disappears until I recheck the page. Now, I believe these issues are limited to the nightlys and betas as I don’t recall any issues with the 1.0x versions (I could be wrong, though).
