Outlook 2003 “An OLE registration error occurred” Fix
Earlier today, I managed to find myself in a very annoying fight with Microsoft Outlook 2003. As I tried to reply to someone who sent me an email via the comment page, the program gave me the following error:
Microsoft Word is set to be your e-mail editor. However, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not the same version as Outlook. The Outlook e-mail editor will be used instead. An OLE registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run setup again for the program.
As part of my normal problem solving routine, I simply did a Google search with the text of the error. Turns out, I’m not the only one with this problem. So I dove into these forum/newsgroup posts looking for something that will help me out on this. Many different Microsoft MVPs weighed in on the problem, each pointing to several Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on the subject. While these gave a few ideas such as using the detect and repair function and doing a complete reinstall, nothing was working (though, I didn’t mess with the reinstall). I was getting really annoyed. That’s when I took a minute to calm down and remembered that many of Outlook’s functions actually use Outlook Express’ core. Thinking I was on to something, I tried several fixes including trying to remove and reinstall OLE. Nothing. It didn’t do a damn thing.
At this point, I was very, very unhappy. I like the idea of using Word as my editor (because it can catch my many spelling mistakes..lol) and didn’t want to think of switching to another client. It was this moment of anger that I just said “screw it” and started tinkering. After a quick round of failures, I was down to my last shot. So I ran this from Start>Run.
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll
Poof, problem solved. Somehow, OLE32.dll unregistered on my system and this was causing Outlook to freak out. After all that, it came down to such a simple fix. My joy at having resolved the issue totally outweighed my anger now and I could come here and fulfill my blogger obligation by whining about pointless, retarded crap. How cathartic.

Wish i would have known about this before! I had something like this happen a few months back and the only way to fix it was to uninstall Office then reinstall it again. It’s such a waste of time.
I don’t even use Outlook anymore, though. Why don’t you switch to something like Thunderbird? It blows Outlook out of the water and is much safer to run.
Thunderbird is great if you have basic email needs, but it really can’t hold a candle to Outlook 2003. Since I manage some 15 different email accounts and get, I kid you not, hundreds of emails a day (not counting spam), I need something that’s going to give me the most power. Thunderbird simply doesn’t have what it takes yet.
In time, I hope that changes. It would be great to see a free, open source program finally take on Microsoft in this department. However, I think there’s a long, long road ahead for anyone willing to take on the giant’s best program suite.
Thanks a lot for this, I’ve been pulling my hair out for 2 weeks now with Repair/Reinstall, etc (which did absolutely nothing). I registered the DLL, and it fixed in 10 seconds.
Take care.
Hey SteveOH, I’m glad this was able to help you out!
Thank you so much…I was going crazy trying to fix this issue. Thanks again!!! =)
I know just where you’re coming from Mary! When I figured out how to solve this, I was minutes away from pulling my hair out…lol. So knowing this is helping others is a great ego boost.
Thanks for the help.
P.S. Weird but I didn’t get this error earlier.
This was a great help can’t tell you how frustrated i was…Thanks a million…
It’s just awsome that so many people are finding this useful

Ran the regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll fix, Did not work for me…still having this problem. Any other suggestions?
You are the Bomb. I ran regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll and now all is fine. You made my day. Thanks so much.
Thanks, it was very helpfull, and solve the problem.
Your fix worked…I wish I had found it sooner. I couldn’t find any help from the Microsoft site.
Thanks to you I still have some hair to pull out at a latter time.
WOW !!!!
You are the man…i’ve been fighting with this issue for a long time…Thanks for the data…
I’m simply blown away by the number of people this is still helping. Needless to say, I’m thrilled I could help so many people with a simple blog post. Keep the comments coming!
Yeah, totally thanks.
First google search was your listing, and boom. it was done and fixed in nada time.

man, I wished it worked 100% of the time. Nothing seems to fix this issue. i only get it when I hi t the send rec button.
Doh! Doesn’t work for me. Clicking Send/Receive still gives the error
Woah fixed it
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=552726&SiteID=17
Try this
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
Thank you very much for this fix, searched around for hours, no solution worked but this one, crazy thing that DLLs just come unregistered over the weekend! Thanks a million!!!
Thanks a bunch … You guys made my day too …. just opend the Run and coppied “regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll” and enter …. all fixed …
cheers
It didn’t work for me, which was a shame, but Jon’s fix above did.. so I’m a happy camper!
You’ve helped another person JW.
Cheers!
Thanks Jon your fix for the send rec button worked just fine!
Thank you… Had to change the path to the file. On my computer there wasnt a windows folder, just WINNT. I shortened it to “regsvr32 ole32.dll”.
Once again thanks.
Only Jon’s fix worked which is again
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
Thanks for the fix!
Unfortunately I am still getting the error. I am using Outlook 2003 and when I tried to open the place to uncheck ‘Make this Folder Available Offline’, it gave me the OLE error and would not display that form.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much, this was really helpful for me. I really appreciate it.
Thanks this helped me as well! I took me 5 minutes to find all this info. Ran both the dll update, and had to do the pulldown in send and receive. It worked great!
Worked like a charm! Thanks! MS’s KB article didn’t even fix the solution, not even an uninstall/reinstall worked for me. Glad this post has a high Google ranking
Well done this worked for me also!
Another !Thanks! to you for your help
I cannot believe the regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll actually worked. I have never had a repair that fast before for a .dll error. From google to repair: 12 seconds!!! THANX!!!!!!
Thank you for recommendation regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll. You should get Microsoft to add this to their support document or have your results come up before Microsoft. I think the latter would have been easier. Thank you for posting you solution.
Had the same issue with MS Office 2003 when clicking on Send / Receive…
Restarting the dll dint work, but only Jon’s fix worked which is again
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
Thanks so much! I was at a huge loss!
Fixed my problem in seconds!
Thanks…wished I would haver read this first.
Worked like a charm.
peace,
jay
I am very frustrated!
I have been trying to fix this error. When I go to Start, Run and type in
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll I get the following message: LoadLibrary(”c:windows\system32\ole32.dll”)failed. GetLastError returns 0×00000485.
I do not kow what to do. Any suggestions?
Thanks John
This is the best advice I have had. Reinstalled Office 5 times now and still nothing. It is now fixed…less frustrated. cheers
GENIOUS! i also suffered from this problem and i even tried reinstalling, rebooting and the whole kit. I tried your idea and it fixed it
Thanks!
Thank you, you are a genius! I am sure that you have a very good idea how frustrating it is to have this problem and not be able to fix it. I have uninstalled, reinstalled several times and was ready to reformat my harddrive and start all over again. Your e-mail saved me an endless amount of grief.
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll worked like magic.
Thanks a million!
Thank you.. Outlook stopped working correctly for no reason this morning. I searched for that error & you’re the 2nd site I looked at!
Jon’s solution worked the other solution (regsvr32) did not.
I had the same experience that Byte did (above).. The Regsvr32 solution didn’t fix it (alone) but after performing Jon’s solution next, it was fixed. Perhaps they need to be performed in that order -
1) regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll
then,
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
Maybe they’re 2 different problems, but they’re both easy and harmless fixes anyway..
Thanks for the Blog!
Classic!
Thanks so much for the fix - one frustrated chappie now very happy!
amazing! thanks for the quick fix and saving me hours of frustration.
The check/uncheck solution worked like a charm! Easy solution to a very annoying error - thanks!
Thank you!
First time I’ve run into this problem. Happened after using trial version of Outlook 2007 then going back to Outlook 2003.
Again Thank you for posting!
TJ
Thank you and very well done for the find!!!
Worked perfectly for me as well…
Worked for me as well also, was tearing my hair out after multiple reinstalls/repairs.
Thanks guys. I looked like a genius when I ran this on a client’s notebook. Keep it up Genius
No other solutions worked, but Jon’s fixed worked for me!

I’ve had this error once before, a long time ago. Forgot about the reg32 thing until I ran across it hear. It didn’t fix my prob this time, but Jon’s suggestion about the “check box” setting did work. It’s amazing what you can find on the Web!!
Thanks to both of you for sharing your info and providing help to others. I couldn’t believe that this has been going on since 2005!!!

thank you so much man, this was the only and simplest fix to the problem.
Just wonder why Microsoft don’t suggest this solution in its KB articles as a first method to fix the problem!
Yes, the send & receive tick untick method worked fine for me… Thanks a lot
You are the man!! This message has been driving me crazy!
Sadly for me none of the above methods work
anyone got another idea?
Dude this worked first try for one of my clients, hooray for you and hooray for google for putting this at the top of the pile this solution made my day!
Just wanted to add another big THANK YOU!. Your solution worked BAM! done.
Rock on!
first it didn’t work for me but after i see this option below
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
now it worked. Great! Thanks!

Thanks a bazillion! You saved me another 1,000 hours of headaches!
Hey guys, I tried both things (regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll and pull down trick) and still didn’t work. I had installed Office 2007 and uninstalled as it gave me problems, and after reinstalling 2003 I got this error. Any ideas?
Hi, I have the same issue, installed a trial of office 2007, found it impossible to remove, followed microsofts instructions then used a removal program. I then re-installed office 2003, and tough it sends and recieves ok, when I hit the send recieve button I get the errror message everyone else seems to get - HELP keith.blowes@sky.com
Thanks Jon… This is still helping people out!
Woah fixed it
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=552726&SiteID=17
Try this
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
Jon’s solution worked perfectly for me. Thanks man!

This advice
1) regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll
then,
1. Send/Receive pull-dpown menu (same button which gives the error message)
2. Send/Receive Settings
3. Uncheck “Make This Folder Available Offline”
4. Check “Make This Folder Available Offline” again
worked perfectly! I was getting this after downgrading from 2007 to 2003. Thanks!
None of the above worked for me, I am using outlook 2007, went to add\remove programs, selected Office repair\change, selected all to run from my computer, not sure why some were not selected, regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll showed succeded, but outlook still did not work, add\remove, run all from my computer, fixed outlook for me.
WOW thx it helped me!

lol i might be a bit too late but thank you very much it just happened to me now after been using it for over 5 years. i was going crazy untill the check and unchek job made it all sweet again.

Thanks a lot for the FIX.
Greetings from Spain.
Wow. Almost 3 years from your original post, and you’ve just helped another! I’ve been working on this (sadly using the microsoft website help) for weeks, with no luck. Until now.
THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you!
I was in a simular boat - this trick worked for me too!!
Thanks Mr Wilson.
You just saved my bacon today. Thanks for this.
I only spent 30 minutes reinstalling Outlook until I decided to do a Google search and found your fix. THANK YOU!!!
Well, neither of the solutions worked to me however, they lead me to find the solution to my issue. Actually I checked for the “Make This Folder Available Offline” option and couldn’t even find it; nevertheless, I went to “Send/receive settings” then to “Define send/receive groups”. Then having the first group name selected (All accounts), click on edit button and found that non of the settings were “ticked”. I just checked on the “Include the selected account in this group” and some setting on there and that was it
Hope this helps anyone else too.
THANK YOU!! I found your solution via Google. Registering it worked!
HI
I have also the same problem and the woked for me is
Tools -> Option -> Mail Setup -> Send/Recive -> Edit -> Check “Include the selected account in this group” check box.

Thanks
Your advice solve my problem only in a second.

Thanks yo, I was about to throw outlook out the window, and the rest of my computer with it.
Hi,
Thanks for both the regsvr32 and send/receive fixes, however neither worked for me…..
If anyone has any ideas, all gratefully received.
Just fixed it, after trying both the fixes as above, resorted to the detect and repair from within outlook itself…Help\detect and repair. However I also had an issue with windows installer, so re-registered msi.dll, as regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msi.dll.
Then detect and repair….and hey nonny nonny….it worked.
Send and receive error gone…..
hello,
I’m really very thankful to you. i was having this problem since i started to work on outlook and many a times i tried and was unable to sort out.
Thanks a ton for the solution, now it’s really working wonderfully.

Thanks to JOn and Omar for the fixes…Great Help!!!!
I had the same problem… runing Vista, intalled Office 07, uninstalled it. reinstalled 03. I went to the MS web site… they had instructions on how to create a new mail profile. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918/en-us –to make a long story short.. I discovered that when I uninstalled 07 it made my CorelWP my new defalt profile. I simply selected the Outlook mail profile as my default and it worked. IT WAS INCREDIBLY MUCH SIMPLER. Thought it may help.
I heard about not bad application-fix my outlook, can be work with damage data in Microsoft Outlook, possible it may recover corrupted contacts with are sharing it, also do something read (detect and recover) data from the selected *.pst file, work with storing emails, business and personal contacts, as well as other important information, such as appointments, tasks and notes.
THANK YOU.
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\ole32.dll fixed my problem.
Works super perfect Thank you
Jon - Uncheck and recheck….brilliant. Thanks for the help!
I had turned word off as the editor, but once I read this, changed the path to the relevant DLL (I searched for it first) I was able to run the command REGSVR as suggested.
Thanks to all the commenters who posted their amendments to this as they were v useful.
